The new rating assessments come into effect on 1 April 2010 and will result in higher rates being payable on many commercial properties.  The number of appeals are expected to increase from this date, with the new assessments being based on the rental value of the property as at April 2008, when the economy was much stronger than it is now.

Such appeals cannot, however, be lodged until the new List comes into effect on 1 April 2010.

The increasing burden of rates is of concern to all and therefore very careful consideration should be given to rateable values and appeals submitted where appropriate.

The last day to appeal against valuations on the 2005 Valuation List is 31 March 2010.  This deadline is extended to 30 September 2010 where the appeal is based on a Tribunal or Court decision in another case.
