Compulsory online filing will start to apply to small businesses and employers from April 2010. While in principle the ICAEW’s Tax Faculty supports the move to online filing, it has published a paper containing a number of criticisms and suggested amendments.
The faculty’s main concern is that laying the regulations for compulsory online filing should be deferred until HMRC’s system and service standards have been fully operational and functioning well for at least 12 months, landline Broadband access is available throughout the UK, and the economic climate has improved.
As a secondary concern, the faculty points out that there are still small businesses which have no computer or interest access.
